Mastering the Art of Layering

Mastering the Art of Layering

The climates in the UK mean women have become the masters of layering! When playing sport it’s vital as you head onto the frosty tee box, take your first shot down the fairway as the sun peeks behind a cloud and by the green you’re wishing you’d worn shorts! So practically, layering is what we do naturally! However, layering with style is quite an art, and one which we see on the likes of Kiera Knightly, Kate Moss, and other celebrities, who’s outfits look like they’ve been thrown carelessly together and yet will have taken quite some thought by their stylists!

Foundation – Start with the basics!

The first layer should be fitted, think classic like a crisp white T-shirt, a slim fit button-down shirt or a lightweight sweater.

Mix Textures and Fabrics

Creating the visual impact and interest comes from mixing textures and fabrics. Experiment with contrasting materials such as cotton, wool, denim, leather and cashmere. Pair a chunky knit sweater with a smooth leather jacket, let the sleeves hang below the cuff and the fitted shirt popping into sight from the collar. Or with your lightweight long linen shirt, a short knitted tank and a cosy wool blazer.
Layer a long garment with a short one over, with a medium length over the top of that to create multiple clothing dimensions.

Focus on Colour coordination.

Although layering brings endless opportunities – unless you are Zandra Rhodes you want to pay attention to colour coordination. Balancing your colour palette is the key and so opt for complementary hues or stick to a monochromatic colour scheme. Also experimenting with tonal layering by mixing shades of the same colour family then throw caution to the wind and add a pop of colour with a vibrant accessory or statement piece!

Accessorise thoughtfully!

Accessories, well that’s a whole other styling article in one place!! Complete your layered look and add some personality with carefully curated accessories like scarves, hats (see article on hats) belts and jewellery – even glasses!
A bright patterned scarf can add intrigue to a simple ensemble, whilst a statement necklace can elevate a basic white tee shirt! Word to the wise, don’t overwhelm an outfit – sometimes less is indeed, more.

Practical layering!

We mentioned layering isn’t just reserved for the cold weather, but goodness it helps. Remember when layering opt for lighter weights and breathable materials that allow for airflow and comfort.

In the summer layering a linen shirt over a tank top, and adding a lightweight long cardigan makes for a great layering look. Whereas in the winter embrace the heavier fabrics and cosy knits to stay warm!

Overall, don’t be afraid to push boundaries, mix unexpected pieces, try new combinations. Look at the celebrities see how they dress for a trip out in London, fashion is meant to be playful, personal and endlessly inventive. Over the last years , old views such as blue and green should never be seen, or don’t mix stripes and checks – they’re all old hat now. Anything goes – so have fun!
