The Captains Drive in is a cherished tradition, marking the official start of the golf season at many clubs and courses around the world. This event holds significant cultural and ceremonial importance in building camaraderie and community in the club!
Lady Captains take their leadership position within the club, alongside other officials, to oversee the smooth operation of club activities, events and competitions. They represent the interests of their women members, act as an ambassador for the clubs, and encouraging participation among women of all ages and skill levels.
In our February issue we included some tips on fund-raising activities and so this month we have done research on Social Events that have had significant success in other clubs, as a source of inspiration for any new lady captains reading this article.
How about organising something fun for the Captains Drive in? For example a themed dress up (Argyle sweaters and pantaloons? Alice in Wonderland, Theatrical costumes and so on).
Host a BBQ with live music, and create some cocktail names that celebrate the captains!

Social Event Ideas for Summer
Lady Captains are going to search out ideas that haven’t been tried at the club. On a year that I was asked to be vice captain, the new Lady Captain wanted to organise some Marines to abseil from a helicopter over the lake at the 7th hole! We didn’t factor in the health and safety risks–it just seemed like a good idea! Anyway, we researched some other, safer, ideas for your summer socials and to help raise money for the Lady Captains Charity!
Silly Hat Day: Invite members to wear their most outrageous and eccentric hats while they play golf. Encourage creativity and offer prizes for categories like "Most Colorful Hat," "Most Creative Design," or "Biggest Hat Brim."
Strictly Come Dancing on the Greens: Organize a dance competition inspired by the popular TV show "Strictly Come Dancing" (known as "Dancing with the Stars" in some countries). Pair up club members as dance partners and have them perform routines on a designated outdoor dance floor or putting green. Judges can score the performances, and the audience can vote for their favorites.
Pina Coladas in the Bunkers: Transform one of the sand traps into a tropical oasis by setting up a makeshift tiki bar serving refreshing pina coladas and other tropical cocktails. Add beach chairs, umbrellas, and tropical decorations to create a relaxing atmosphere where members can enjoy their drinks while soaking up the sun.
Luau BBQ Bash: Host a Hawaiian-themed BBQ party complete with traditional luau cuisine, tropical cocktails, and festive decorations. Encourage members to dress in Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts, and leis. Activities can include limbo contests, hula dancing lessons, and a "Best Hawaiian Outfit" competition.
Glow Golf Night: Turn the golf course into a glowing playground by hosting a nighttime glow golf event. Provide glow sticks, LED golf balls, and light-up accessories for players to use on the course. Set up glow-in-the-dark putting greens and offer neon-themed cocktails at the clubhouse.
Dog Days of Summer Pup Parade: Invite members to bring their furry friends for a dog-friendly event on the course. Organize a dog parade where pups can show off their best costumes or golf-themed attire. Offer dog-friendly treats and refreshments, and consider partnering with a local animal charity for a fundraising component.
Summer Solstice Sunrise Breakfast: Celebrate the longest day of the year with an early morning breakfast buffet served on the clubhouse patio or overlooking the golf course. Members can gather to watch the sunrise while enjoying delicious breakfast foods, fresh juices, and mimosas.
Wacky Golf Cart Parade: Encourage members to decorate their golf carts in imaginative and wacky themes, then parade them around the clubhouse or course. Themes could range from "Pirate Ship" to "Space Odyssey" or "Tropical Tiki Bar." Award prizes for the most creative, humorous, and elaborate decorations.
Beach Bonfire and BBQ: Create a beach-like atmosphere by setting up a bonfire pit near the clubhouse or on the driving range. Provide marshmallows for roasting, beach chairs for lounging, and acoustic music for ambiance. Serve BBQ favorites and summer cocktails for a laid-back evening under the stars.
