How Women Can Champion Prostate Cancer Awareness at Golf Clubs

How Women Can Champion Prostate Cancer Awareness at Golf Clubs

Golf clubs are an ideal setting for raising awareness as it’s a sport with a high percentage of male participants. Women golfers can leverage their role as influencers within their golf clubs to initiate discussions about health and wellness.

There are probably only two steps you need to take to introduce this important subject into your club.

First up could be simply a leaflet in the men’s changing rooms that includes compelling (yet not chilling) statistics about Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men, affecting one in 8 men during their lifetime. However, Prostate cancer is also one of the most treatable if caught early with 90% of men treated having a survival rate of 5 years or more.
To help our Birdies ladies’ we have actually designed such a poster for you to download and simply print and pin up in the changing room! Check out this link on our website.

Organising an event might feel a step too far, but even if no men come to the event, we KNOW that women are the caregivers in families and will learn the information required and pass it on to their menfolk.

Start the event with a round of 9 holes. Try to encourage men to come along but even if it’s just ladies we know the power of communication.

Find a guest speaker who can explain first hand their experience of dealing with Prostate cancer, assuring the men of treatment successes and encouraging them to take a test. Make sure you have some leaflets (most charities can supply these) that explain basic information including symptoms, risks, etc.
At the Little Aston Event, David Hadley Smith gave an inspirational account of his experience of Prostate cancer and how he encouraged the men at his club to get tested.
